In India, “University” means a institution of higher education recognized by or under a Central Act, a Provincial Act or a State Act and consist of any such institution as may, in meeting with the University concerned, be recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in accordance with the regulations made in this regard under the UGC Act, 1956. Each year, number of candidates from within the country and abroad, enter these portals mainly for their graduate, post graduate studies. The types of universities include:
- Central Universities: Central universities or Union institution of higher education are recognized by an Act of Parliament and are under the purview of the Department of Higher Education in the Union Human Resource Development Ministry. The UGC lists 46 central universities.
- State Universities: State universities are run by the state government of each of the states and territories of India, and are commonly recognized by a local legislative assembly act. State university systems should not be confused with federally funded colleges and universities, at which attendance is limited to military personnel and government employees. These state universities include the United States military academies, Naval Postgraduate School, and military staff colleges.
- Deemed University: Deemed university or “Deemed to be University”, is a position of self-government granted by the Department of Higher Education on the advice of the UGC, under Section 3 of the UGC Act. The UGC list from 23 June 2008 lists 128 deemed universities.
- Private Universities: Private universities are approved by the UGC. They can contribute degrees but they are not permitted to have off-campus associated colleges. The UGC list of private universities as on 30 June 2015 lists 216 private universities.
Public universities are maintained by the Government of India and the state governments, while private institutions of higher education are frequently supported by different bodies and societies. Universities in India are acknowledged by the University Grants Commission (UGC), which draws its authority from the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. In addition, 15 Professional Councils are recognized, controlling various aspects of official recognition and management.
