Orissa, the modern name of the ancient kingdom of Kalinga, is a state of India located by the Bay of Bengal on the east coast of India. Bhabaneshwar is the capital of this state which has Oriya as the official and most widely speaking language of the state. Orissa has a relatively unindented coastline and lack good ports. A major ancient university and center of Buddhist learning, Ratnagiri, were recently discovered in the Jaipur district of Orissa. Entry to various higher education institutes, especially engineering colleges is through a centralised Orissa Joint Entrance Examination, conducted by the Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT), Rourkela where seats are provided to the candidates according to order of merit.
