Tamil Nadu, the most literate state in India with the literacy rate of 80.33% in 2011 is still growing in the field of education with the increased no. of Universities in Tamilnadu for providing higher education in state. The private institutions in Tamil Nadu has grown significantly over the past few years covering almost 90% of the management and engineering colleges in the state. The Govt. of Tamil Nadu knows that knowledge is the resource which can help the state grow with the increasing competition of the country along with global competitiveness, for this reason, the Govt. devotes special attention towards the higher education provided in the state to meet the demands of the upcoming competitiveness.
In this section, we will focus on Universities in Tamil Nadu for providing higher education.
Tamil Nadu, with 37 universities, covering above 4000 colleges in the states including about 500 engineering colleges, 1150 college of arts, and around 2500 schools produce the highest no. of engineering graduates every year in comparison to all the other states in India. This results in attracting most of the software and other companies in this part of India.
The system of higher education in India is among the largest in the world and the state of Tamil Nadu has played a key role for that, as being the second largest Industrialised state in India after Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu also emerged as the state for registering high growth in terms of both university and college level at the national level.
University level institutions comprises of Institutions of National Importance, State Universities, Deemed Universities with government funds and Deemed Universities without government funds or self-financing or private universities. Dakshina Bharti Hindi Prachar Sabha and Indian Institute of Technology are two main deemed universities located in Tamil Nadu which are of national importance.
